ANETO Pico BOLIVAR - Roof of the Pyrenees -

RISE TO ANETO

by Jaime Suárez

The Aneto, with 3,404 meters above the sea level is the highest summit of the Pyrenees mountain range that separates Spain and France. Located in the Central Pyrenees, in the Benasque Valley Aragon, in one of the most representative ecosystems of the high mountains of Europe. It is surrounded by the largest glaciers and the highest number of peaks over 3,000 meters of the mountain.

The natural framework for integrating the Aneto offers a wide variety of mountain sports ranging from skiing, climbing, climbing, hiking, canyoning, the marathon and a few others that make it a mecca Pirin and one of the most popular parts of the English mountains.

But the large number of visitors who stand here, coupled with uncontrolled camping, garbage drop, projection works as new plants, power lines, border crossings, etc., forced necessary to protect this mountain area by the Aragon. Thus arose the Posets-Maladeta in 1994 with the aim of safeguarding the natural, fauna, flora, geomorphological and to enhance and preserve their ecosystems ensuring the rational use of natural resources. This park has an area of \u200b\u200b33,267 hectares. ranging between 1,500 and 3,400 meters.

had left Barcelona Benasque from members of the UPAME (Pan American Union of Mountaineering and Climbing) representing Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, French representatives of the UIAA and the authorities of the English Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing. There would develop the first meeting of our institution that was outside the American continent and the 5 th International Congress of Ecology of mountain ecosystems, and to top it, could not miss, up to Aneto.
the 300 km to go, starting from 5 meters above sea level in Barcelona until the 1,135 meters of the Benasque Valley, passed quickly as we watched the crops and landscapes from the Catalan countryside and then the entrance to the green valleys mountain area. After 4 hours of pleasant we travel.
We stayed at the impressive modern building of stone facades and 4 plants where does the English High Mountain of the English Federation, which includes a separate building, also of stone and large windows, a "climbing" to practice climbing.
We were surprised in the mountains to contemplate building such a category, as well as management training and resource management. It would be interesting to capitalize on experiences.
soon passed the days of meetings, together with the food tasting, walking through the town of Benasque modern and medieval old town, and observation visits and buy a very important mountain shop.
We kept extendérsenos wonder that the bill, the bottom we read the weather forecast for the next 48 hours: "Weather cloudy and" variable for Saturday, with less sun than expected in recent days. Winds of "moderate north-west, temperatures of 4 degrees and 19 degrees minimum" maximum, zero isotherm at 2,300 meters. For Sunday Cloudy with 23 days' sun, temperatures between 5 and 23 degrees, with winds from the northwest-south loose and "zero isotherm at 2,500 meters." It was a great help for visitors.

was about to begin summer in the northern hemisphere and winter in Argentina, but the instability climate kept stakeholders that could happen on May 28 that he would leave to the mountain. That night it rained heavily and the weather forecast was not favorable.
left our comfortable lodge Mountain High School at 17.30 hours, in vehicles, to the Basurto, on a paved road to the entrance to the Plains Hospital to 1,758 meters and from there by a consolidated road, which used as winter ski traffic up, until our first stage to 1,900 meters high. We arrived after a 17-kilometer march. In The Basurto, in a place specially dedicated to parking, trucks would be waiting.
Sheathed in our outerwear, including pick, pack (where would our crampons, goggles, food, running for the next day, parka coat, spare socks and water bottle) and placed our tall boots, we started up a trail serpentine, surrounding forests and some dim little ice age in this stage fighting against the end of spring. The 250 meter drop that exist at the shelter of La Renclusa, our destination where we would spend day and night, were overcome after 40 minutes of walking.
This rock shelter that has all the services is in the process of parts that include its expansion and modernization. Prices are extremely affordable. There was much movement of climbers and skiers which together with the work in progress makes us all potential mountaineer suggest you make the necessary inquiries in the town of Benasque to ensure accommodations. But it is important to access, for more experience you have, with someone experienced or hire a guide service, to enjoy the company, and minimized the possibility of accidents.
We had to leave our boots at the entrance of the shelter and placed some slippers for going inside. We settled on a first floor bedroom comfortable bunks for six, with mattresses, and soon we were invited to the dinner that was more than tasty. Had to wake up at 4 and a half in the morning to take the snow as hard as possible and avoid being enterrásemos to rise, as this may delay than consume our energy. Between jokes started sleeping about 22 hours. At the appointed hour, consecutive beeps several watches announced that he had to get up. We got dressed and after a good breakfast, worthy of the best hotel, we left at quarter to six in the morning.
was necessary in the first few minutes despite the whiteness of the snow, using headlamps. After two times triggered by a steep Portillón got to the top which is the 2,870 meters, where a short break allowed us to put the crampons on our boots. From there we had to descend a steep but short slope to introduce us to the glacier Aneto. We could already see
sector Aneto summit. Continue to the Collado de Coronas, 3,190 meters, outlining the glacier Aneto and treading a fine snow bear our weight. The group had gone compact and united, had been separated for the effort and to adapt each to its best pace. It was very nice after several days have been looking at the mountains from the valley to walk in between them. The difference in landscape and tall with our mountains in the south, the rise was more comfortable. We arrived about an hour and a half later.
The view was breathtaking, an up and tilted crown the Aneto glacier allowed in a drop of just over 200 meters. We took a short break and we take a look also to direct all around us and see the peaks that surrounded us. But we should continue, and the snow was not so hard, despite the height.
About fifty minutes later we hugged in the Aneto precumbre to almost 3,400 meters high. A fine wind greeted us. Jaime Suarez

Aneto, almost at the summit!

There was still overcoming the bridge named Mohammed, edge formed by a gap of stone about 80 centimeters wide by 30 feet long, but with deep precipices on both sides, which allows access to the real summit. The danger here is vertigo since the hands and feet are always where they hang. Allows the passage of persons in a sense, but must stop at some points to make way for a rash that just wants cruzársenos, patiently waiting their turn or be extremely careful with any step it takes others.
with great care and after leaving the ax and crampons in precumbre to work with more security, we overcome. Finally we embrace at the top end of Aneto. It was ten twenty, had delayed a little over four hours since leaving the shelter. Again looks backward towards finding a landscape or familiar spot among so many mountains trying to build in our minds the journey traveled. We started out the usual summit photos to remember the moment. We were next to a monolith with a small image of the Virgen del Pilar, identical to that found in Zaragoza and excelled in a metal block snow. It was the best proof of having arrived at the maximum height of the Pyrenees.
The vision was perfect despite the large and menacing dark clouds covered the sky in height.
After mutual greetings and congratulations proceeded to decline. It was not easy. The snow had begun to soften and burying us step by step. It took three long hours before coming to The Renclusa, since there was so much easier, in 30 minutes we were in the Basurto. We entered the vehicle and returned to Mountain High School for a deserved if belated lunch.
Later we learned that the reproduction of the Virgen del Pilar was placed in the 50's and also a large metal cross that was shot a short time ago by a storm and was buried in snow only a small part sticking out, which was what we apreciado.Merece off the traveler who loves the mountains and travel to Spain, arriving at this beautiful place in the Pyrenees.
